All roles
Pick a job. You'll see what it takes to get hired, then what the first year expects, starting from what you already know. Every role is a draft until it has been checked against real job postings.
Software engineering
- Software engineer (SDE)
Writes and maintains the code behind products. Entry-level hiring in India mostly tests data structures and algorithms first, then how you write and reason about code.
- Backend engineer
Builds the services, APIs and data storage behind an app. Most of the job is correctness, performance and keeping things running.
- Frontend engineer
Builds what people see and touch in the browser, and makes it fast, accessible and pleasant to use.
- Full-stack engineer
Works across the browser, the server and the database. Common in startups, where one person ships a whole feature.
- Android developer
Builds and ships Android apps. India is one of the largest Android markets, so the work is everywhere from startups to banks.
- QA engineer / SDET
Finds out whether software works before customers do, increasingly by writing code that tests code.
- iOS developer
Builds iPhone and iPad apps in Swift, from screens and navigation to networking and the App Store.
- Salesforce administrator / developer
Configures and extends Salesforce for a company. Objects, security, automation and reports, then code and integrations as the job grows.
- ServiceNow developer
Builds and runs the ServiceNow platform that a company's IT support runs on. Forms, workflows, scripts and integrations.
- Embedded engineer
Writes the software inside devices, from sensors to cars. A natural fit for electronics and electrical graduates.
Data and machine learning
- Data analyst
Turns business questions into queries, numbers and charts that someone can act on.
- Data engineer
Builds the pipelines and warehouses that get data from where it's created to where it's analysed, reliably and on time.
- Machine learning engineer
Trains models and, more often, gets them working reliably in a real product.
- Deep learning engineer (vision / language)
Trains and ships neural networks for images, text or speech. More modelling than an ML engineer, more shipping than a researcher.
- MLOps engineer
Gets models out of notebooks and keeps them running. Pipelines, deployment, monitoring and retraining.
- BI developer
Builds the dashboards and data models a business runs on, in Power BI or Tableau on top of a warehouse.
- Analytics engineer
Sits between data engineering and analysis. Turns raw tables into clean, tested models with SQL and dbt.
- Product analyst
Works out how people use a product and whether changes helped, with SQL, experiments and dashboards.
- Data scientist
Uses statistics, experiments and models to answer questions a business actually has, and explains the answer clearly.
- AI / LLM engineer
Builds products on top of large language models. Mostly software engineering, plus retrieval, prompting and careful evaluation.
Infrastructure
- DevOps / site reliability engineer
Keeps software building, deploying and running. Automation, infrastructure and being calm when things break.
- Platform engineer
Builds the internal platform other engineers ship on. Clusters, pipelines, templates and self-service tooling.
- System administrator
Keeps servers, users and networks working. Patching, backups, access, monitoring and fixing what breaks.
- Database administrator
Keeps databases fast, safe and backed up. Tuning, indexing, replication, upgrades and access control.
- Penetration tester
Breaks into systems with permission, then writes up how and how to fix it. Web apps, networks and cloud.
- Security engineer
Designs and builds defences. Secure infrastructure, identity, detection and helping developers ship safe code.
- Solutions architect
Designs systems for customers or teams on a cloud platform, and explains the trade-offs to people who'll pay for them.
- Cloud engineer
Designs, builds and runs infrastructure on a public cloud. A large share of IT services hiring.
- Application support engineer
Keeps business applications running for the people who use them. Incidents, logs, databases and a lot of careful detective work.
- Security analyst (SOC)
Watches for attacks, investigates alerts and responds when something gets through.
Finance, economics and quant
- Quantitative researcher / analyst
Finds and tests trading or pricing ideas with maths, statistics and data. Most of the job is research that doesn't work, and noticing when it does.
- Quant developer
Builds the fast, correct systems quants and traders run on. Pricing libraries, backtesters, market data and execution.
- Risk analyst
Measures market, credit and operational risk for a bank or fund, and reports it to people who set limits.
- Financial analyst
Reads companies' numbers, builds models and valuations, and turns them into recommendations, in research, banking or a company's finance team.
- Economist / economic research analyst
Studies how economies and markets behave with data, for a central bank, ministry, think tank, consultancy or company.
- Statistician / biostatistician
Designs studies and analyses data carefully enough that the conclusions hold, in pharma, health, government or industry.
Product, design and delivery
- Product manager
Decides what a team builds and why, and makes sure it gets built. Users, priorities, specs, data and a lot of conversations.
- UI / UX designer
Researches what users need and designs screens that meet it, from wireframes to polished prototypes.
- Business analyst
Turns what a business needs into requirements a team can build, and checks the result with data. Common in IT services and banks.
- Technical writer
Writes the guides, API references and help pages that make software usable.
- Scrum master / delivery manager
Keeps a team's process working and its delivery predictable. Ceremonies, blockers, metrics and stakeholders.
